Born in Cambridge, became a bookbinder, and noted bell ringer, he collected fossils, manuscripts, and other curiosities. Bequests included \u00a3500 to apprentice boys belonging to Hobson&#8217;s workhouse and shares to the value of \u00a37,000 were left to enlarge Addenbrooke&#8217;s Hospital (founded 1766). Portrait of him (apparently now missing) used to hang in in the court-room of old Addenbrookes Hospital.
