Famous members – John Bowtell (1753-1813)

John Bowtell (1753-1813) – elected SCY member 1773. Born in Cambridge, became a bookbinder, and noted bell ringer, he collected fossils, manuscripts, and other curiosities. Bequests included £500 to apprentice boys belonging to Hobson’s workhouse and shares to the value of £7,000 were left to enlarge Addenbrooke’s Hospital (founded 1766). Portrait of him (apparently now missing) used to hang in in the court-room of old Addenbrookes Hospital. His manuscripts and eight boxes of unpublished notes for a history of Cambridge were left to Downing College.
