50th year as The University Bell Ringer

Sunday 12th April was like any Sunday for Frank King aka The University Bell Ringer and our National Treasure. He went to 8am service, popped into the clock room to check the pennies on the pendulum (which is where I met/collected him this morning) and together we ascended the tower with a view to replace the moth traps before 9am morning ringing.
Usually Frank would be first up the tower but for some reason there were already quite a few ringers already there. No matter, unperturbed Frank and I went to the void and replaced the traps and descended to a now packed and noisy ringing room. It was only 8.40.

Soon we were joined by our vicar and President Rev Jutta Bruek and College Praelector Tim Milner (sporting his University attire).
Jutta began and it at it became clear; we were all gathered to congratulate a very much surprised Frank on his 50 years as University Bellringer.

First off Jutta presented Frank with a special award; Every two years, the Bishop of Ely awards the Etheldreda Medal to individuals who have given ‘generous and outstanding service’, which would not otherwise be recognised.

Tim them presented a certificate of appreciation from the University Vice-chancellor and a card signed by Proctors Beadles and various University dignitaries.

SCY Master Greg then presented Frank with an engraved Glass placque and commemorative certificate.

Lastly Amy as CUG Master presented a framed A3 print of classic Frank images; ringing, university activities, in the clock room.

Frank then opened his response in typical manner; In Latin quoting Virgil from the Georgics. He followed with a translation.

Then the first touch which, following some prayers, was Etheldreda Delight Major on the back 8. Other touches included rounds and call changes on 12, Cambridge maximus, Bristol Maximus and Stedman Cinques.
